Meth Addiction

There is a powerful force at work today against the citizens of Tennessee and Georgia that force is addiction.  Addiction is defined as a strong tolerance to and dependence on something especially with drugs or alcohol.  Thousands of residents in rural and urban settings throughout Tennessee and Georgia are dealing with a great dependence on the illegal drug of methamphetamine

Meth has become, in many areas, the drug of choice for working moms and dads who live busy hectic lifestyles, enabling the user to remain highly aware and active.  Adolescents are also finding meth appealing especially with teen age girls and women who want to use the drug as a method of weight loss.  Unfortunately, the first time meth is either snorted, smoked or injected, the user is hooked. Addiction treatment centers throughout the state of Tennessee and Georgia report that the majority of their clients are seeking help because of their addiction to methamphetamine.   The most effective drug rehabs are those that offer cognitive-behavioral interventions or the holistic approach to treatment.

One of the main reasons for such a high use of methamphetamine in Tennessee and Georgia is the close proximity to the Mexican border and the I-75 corridor than runs from Florida into the Midwestern parts of the country.  This corridor through Georgia and Tennessee has become the main thoroughfare for drug trafficking, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

“Much of the methamphetamine consumed in the state is transported from Mexico and the southwest border states. Clandestine methamphetamine labs can be found everywhere in Tennessee, but are predominantly located in the Appalachian areas in Eastern Tennessee.

Mexican methamphetamine trafficking groups control much of the methamphetamine distribution in the Chattanooga area, but command and control for these Mexican organizations are frequently found in Dalton, Georgia. An increase in methamphetamine use and abuse is anticipated in Tennessee as the drug gains popularity over crack cocaine use. This trend is attributed to the highly addictive nature of methamphetamine, particularly Ice.”

Both Tennessee and Georgia have increased their fight against the use and distribution of methamphetamine with television and radio public service announcements.  These 30 second PSA’s describe the effect the drug has on the individual, family, community and nation and can be found at; methfreetn.org and georgiamethproject.org.  However, methamphetamine is not the trouble source in Tennessee and Georgia.  Drugs such as, cocaine, crack, heroin, oxycontin and marijuana are crippling thousands of communities and their citizens.
